7-Day Marrakech to Merzouga & Atlantic Essaouira

Today we will depart Marrakech in the morning, crossing the High Atlas via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 metres, with sweeping views over terraced Berber villages and mineral-rich rock formations. We stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar above the Ounila River and one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world, taking a guided walk through its narrow lanes to the old communal granary for panoramic views. A short drive brings us to Ouarzazate, the 'Hollywood of Africa', where we visit the Taourirt Kasbah, before continuing along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, also known as the Valley of Roses. We check in to a kasbah-style hotel with terrace views over the valley's dramatic folded rock formations for a relaxed dinner as the sun sets. Lunch in Ouarzazate today gives a proper midday break before we continue to the Dades Valley for the night.

After breakfast overlooking the valley, we continue toward Todra Gorge, where sheer pink and orange limestone cliffs rise up to 300 metres on either side of a narrow canyon, stopping for a short walk along the canyon floor. Continuing south, we arrive in Merzouga on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea in the late afternoon, where camel handlers meet us for an unforgettable sunset trek across the dunes, the sand's colours shifting from gold to deep orange as the sun drops toward the horizon. After roughly 45-60 minutes we reach our exclusive desert camp among some of the highest dunes in Morocco. Enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and later, gather around the campfire as Berber musicians play traditional drums under one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth. Lunch today is usually taken near Todra Gorge, often with views over the palm oasis, a memorable stop before the final push to the dunes.

For early risers, this morning offers a climb up a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold. Afterwards, return to camp for a simple Berber breakfast before driving back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver awaits. Today is largely a return journey, retracing the route back through Tinghir and Ouarzazate and crossing the High Atlas once more via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the afternoon. We arrive back in Marrakech in the early evening and check in to your riad, with the evening free — many guests head toward Jemaa el-Fna square for a lively evening. Lunch on the return journey is typically a simple stop in Ouarzazate, giving a proper break midway through this long driving day.

After three days of desert adventure, today is yours to explore Marrakech at your own pace, or we can arrange a local guide for sightseeing on request. Popular highlights include the Bahia Palace, with its elaborately carved cedar ceilings; the Saadian Tombs, a royal necropolis rediscovered in 1917 after lying sealed for nearly 300 years; and the Jardin Majorelle, a cobalt-blue botanical garden created by Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent. The souks are well worth an unhurried visit for leather goods, spices, and Berber carpets, and many guests unwind with a traditional hammam and argan oil massage — a well-earned rest before tomorrow's trip to the coast. Today we swap the desert heat for a completely different pace, driving roughly two and a half hours west to Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed fortified port town on the Atlantic coast, built in its current form in the 18th century. We walk along the Skala de la Ville, the historic sea-facing ramparts lined with bronze cannons, before wandering through the medina's relaxed, art-filled streets and the bustling fishing port, where blue wooden boats unload the day's catch beside simple grilled-fish stalls, an excellent informal lunch option. Essaouira has long been known as 'Wind City' for the reliable Atlantic breeze that has made it a major windsurfing destination since the 1980s. In the late afternoon, we drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the early evening. Fresh grilled fish right on Essaouira's quayside makes for an excellent, informal lunch, watching the day's catch being unloaded just metres away.

This morning we recommend a guided visit to the Koutoubia Mosque gardens, Marrakech's most recognisable landmark, followed by unhurried time in the souks — Marrakech's sprawling market network organised by trade, from leather and lanterns to spices and textiles — an excellent opportunity for any remaining souvenir shopping now that you have a feel for prices and quality. In the afternoon, consider a visit to the Ben Youssef Madrasa, once North Africa's largest Islamic college, famed for its detailed carved stucco, or simply relax at your riad. As evening falls, Jemaa el-Fna square transforms with food stalls, storytellers, and musicians — a wonderful, lively place to enjoy your final dinner in Morocco, surrounded by the sounds and smells that make the square a UNESCO-recognised 'Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity'. Lunch today is a good opportunity to try a restaurant you haven't yet visited, now that you have a feel for the medina's layout.

Our journey together comes to an end this morning. Depending on your flight time, enjoy a final breakfast on your riad's rooftop terrace and a last walk through the medina for any remaining gifts — argan oil, saffron, or handmade leather goods travel well. If time allows, your driver can suggest a final stop at the Menara Gardens, a peaceful 12th-century olive grove with the snow-capped High Atlas as a backdrop. At the appropriate time, your private driver collects you and your luggage and transfers you directly to Marrakech Menara Airport.
